Kepnock Student Trey Andrews Invited to Train in Japan with World-Class Instructors

Kepnock State High School student Trey Andrews has been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train in Japan under some of the world’s most elite karate instructors. From September 29 to October 19, 2025, Trey will immerse himself in an intensive training program that will challenge his skills, discipline, and determination at the highest level.

A Rising Star in Karate

Trey’s journey to this prestigious opportunity began with his outstanding performance at the recent National Karate Championships in Perth, where he represented the Bundaberg Dojo. Competing against top athletes, he secured second place in both of his events. Before the tournament, he underwent three days of intensive training under four of Japan’s top karate sensei, where he was one of only ten under-18 competitors hand-picked by Takahashi Shihan—the highest-ranked black belt in the world—for extra training and demonstrations.

Not only was Trey invited to the front row for special instruction, but he was also chosen to perform drills alongside Takahashi in front of over 150 competitors. This recognition places him on the radar for potential selection in the World Cup team to represent Australia in Mexico next year.

Training in Japan: A Dream Come True

Trey has been training in karate since he was eight years old, and the opportunity to train in Japan has always been one of his biggest goals. “I was very excited and appreciative of the opportunity because not a lot of people get this chance, and I am going to grab it with both hands and run with it,” he said.

His training in Japan will be vastly different from his usual schedule of two weekly sessions lasting an hour and 45 minutes. In Japan, he will train at least six days a week, with two sessions a day, focusing on improving his kumite (sparring) against bigger, stronger opponents. His ultimate goal is to sharpen his skills in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.

Dedication and Preparation

To prepare for the intense training, Trey is already pushing himself beyond regular dojo sessions. He incorporates gym workouts, CrossFit training, and home-based drills, such as practicing on a punching machine and wearing weighted wrist and ankle bands. His diet includes protein-rich foods and supplements to enhance his strength, and he maintains strict sleep and recovery routines, including massages to prevent injuries.

Despite the demanding schedule, Trey is also focused on his academics. He has proactively informed his teachers and school administration about his trip and is working closely with them to ensure he stays on track with his ATAR studies. “I will be in constant communication with my teachers and will receive study materials while I’m away so I can stay prepared,” he said.

Community Support and Fundraising

Trey’s journey is not just a personal achievement but a source of pride for the Bundaberg karate community. His dojo, TSKF Bundaberg, regularly shares updates on his progress, and supporters can follow his journey on their Facebook page.

To help with the costs of this incredible opportunity, fundraising efforts such as raffles and number boards are expected later in the year. “We appreciate any support from the community, whether it's through encouragement or fundraising participation,” said his mother, Christine.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Trey hopes that his journey will inspire others to set big goals and pursue them with dedication. “I hope to come back bigger, stronger, and more confident in my ability,” he said. “I want to be a role model and show that if you dream big and work hard, you can achieve anything.”

As Trey prepares for this life-changing experience, the Kepnock community stands behind him, excited to see how far his passion and discipline will take him.
