Married Couple Celebrate 50 Years of Combined Service at Kepnock State High School
12 June 2025
Kepnock State High School is proudly celebrating a remarkable milestone this year, as long-serving staff members Andrew and Tracey Millis mark a combined 50 years of dedicated service to the school community.
Andrew Millis commenced his career at Kepnock in 1995 as a Manual Arts teacher. Over the past three decades, he has taken on numerous leadership roles including Year Level Coordinator, Subject Area Coordinator, and Head of Department across several faculties. In 2018, he was appointed Deputy Principal, a position he continues to hold with distinction. Andrew is widely respected for his calm leadership, strategic thinking, and unwavering commitment to student success.
Tracey Millis joined the school in 2005 as a Middle School teacher, delivering the four core subjects of English, Mathematics, Humanities, and Science. Over time, she has concentrated her expertise in English, where her creativity and enthusiasm has inspired countless students. Tracey has also contributed significantly in leadership positions including Head of Department, Year Coordinator and Literacy Coach. She is now firmly established as a passionate English teacher, engaging students from Years 7 to 12 with her deep love of language and learning.
Andrew and Tracey are the first married couple to reach the 50-year combined service milestone at Kepnock - a distinction that reflects not only longevity but also their profound impact on the school's culture and student body.
When asked about their journey, both reflected on the many changes and memorable moments they've experienced over the years.
“There are too many favourite memories to count," they smiled. One especially meaningful transition occurred when Andrew moved from his role as Head of Department for Middle School into Industrial Technology & Design, with Tracey stepping in behind him to take over the Middle School leadership role.
Tracey credits Andrew for encouraging her to pursue teaching. “Andrew inspired me to achieve my teaching degree - so glad I took my husband's advice on this one," she laughed.
Much has changed at Kepnock over the past three decades. “Ten new buildings have been added since Andrew started," Tracey noted. “But the heart of the school, its dedication to students, has remained strong."
For Andrew, the most rewarding part of his career has been watching students grow. “The many students who have come and gone, seeing them develop into confident, capable young adults, that's the true reward."
That impact is clearly felt by the students they teach.
“Personally, one of the things I enjoy about being in Mrs Millis' classroom is the time and effort she puts into each of her classes," said student Elise-Mae. “She adapts to everyone's learning style and makes sure we're always pushed to the best of our abilities. She genuinely cares about her students and everything they achieve. Not only has she helped me grow my confidence both in and out of her classroom, but she also provides a safe environment where we feel comfortable to confide in her."
The milestone also holds deep meaning for their family.
“I think that Mum and Dad reaching this milestone together makes it even more special," said their son, Nathan. “From Mum taking that first call to do some substitute work at Kepnock, after coming from an Early Childhood background, to where she is now, is a testament to the resilient and excellent woman she is. And Dad, making his way up through the ranks, becoming a teacher, whose office I spent a bit too much time in waiting for him to finish work, but also someone who constantly pushes students to be the best version of themselves. The fact that they've done this together makes it all the more meaningful."
Colleague Jess Newitt, who has worked with Andrew since 2009, offered this reflection:
“One thing that's never changed is Andrew's unwavering support and sharp sense of humour. He brings calm and laughter to even the most stressful situations and is someone whose friendship and integrity make him a standout. While we may not see eye to eye on codes of football (or fashion, for that matter) his friendship, integrity, and good nature make him an absolute standout. He's not just a colleague I respect, he's a truly good friend."
When Andrew and Tracey were asked what it's like working alongside each other, both agreed it has only strengthened their commitment and respect for one another's work.
Their advice for new staff at Kepnock is simple but heartfelt: “Embrace Kepnock for its commitment to every student - and for the phenomenal teachers who never give up on them."
The Kepnock community extends its deepest thanks and congratulations to Andrew and Tracey Millis - two exceptional educators whose service, leadership, and dedication have left and continue to leave a lasting legacy.
