English is a vibrant, exciting and compulsory subject.

In Years 8 and 9, students read, view and produce a wide variety of texts.  From memoirs to TV reports, from poetry to novel studies, our junior curriculum aims to build students' knowledge and understanding of language structures and genres in engaging and real-life ways.

Year 10 is a transition year, whereby students are introduced to Senior English concepts.  Assessment is written, spoken and mediated (digital technology such as the use of Audacity) and becomes more complex and formal in nature.  Students who experience difficulties in Year 10 are encouraged to consider English Communication in Year 11.

Senior English is a Board subject with an emphasis on literature, and how texts are constructed to position readers/viewers/listeners in certain ways.  Units in Year 11 focus on Australia and our identity, whilst Year 12 moves into the global context with an emphasis on human nature.  PLEASE NOTE: For students to be awarded Sound Achievement or above they must meet or exceed the minimum requirements for Sound Achievement in both written and spoken modes.  (To view the syllabus visit the QSA Website:

English communication is designed for students who have a vocational rather than a purely academic purpose for their studies.  Units include application letter and resume writing, coping with conflict, moving out, budgeting, as well as a novel study.  It should be noted that the course includes both written and spoken assessment tasks.  Approximately 50-70 per cent of tasks are spoken/signed and/or practical (both individual and group) and 50-30 per cent are written in-line with syllabus requirements.
